Aston Villa’s appointment of a new technical director will reportedly lead to the departure of Paddy Riley.

According to a report in the Express and Star, Aston Villa are set to appoint a new technical director in the next fortnight.
Villa have been wanting to appoint a technical director ever since Tony Xia took over at the club.

Xia wants to change the set-up at the Claret and Blues, and believes that the Midlands club needs a shake up at boardroom level.
Villa’s target for the technical director role is yet to be confirmed, but he is expected to be handed a role to advise new manager Roberto Di Matteo.
Di Matteo will continue to have final say over transfers, but the technical director will be able to suggest players and complete work behind the scenes for the new manager.

The Express and Star claims that Villa’s plans will almost certainly see Paddy Riley leave the club.
Riley was the man behind Villa’s recruitment drive last summer, which turned out to be disastrous.
Riley’s place at Villa has looked under threat for some time, and it seems that he could part ways with the Midlands club in the near future.
