According to The Sun, Aston Villa’s move for Hull City striker Abel Hernandez fell apart as he wanted £70,000-a-week in wages, rising to £100,000-a-week if the club won promotion to the Premier League.

Villa added another goal threat to their side on Tuesday, as after signing Ross McCormack earlier this summer, Roberto Di Matteo managed to bring in Jonathan Kodjia from Bristol City as well.

The Ivorian international hit 19 league goals last season, and joins in a staggering deal worth up to £15m according to BBC Sport – but their move came after a deal for Hull City’s Abel Hernandez fell through.

Uruguayan star Hernandez found the net 20 times in the Championship last term to fire Hull to promotion, and he’s got off to a great start in the Premier League this term having scored in a 2-0 win over Swansea City earlier this month.

A drop down into the Championship would be a surprise, but Aston Villa owner Tony Xia took to Twitter on Tuesday to confirm that a deal had been agreed with Hull – but a deal fell apart for reasons he would not disclose.

Now, The Sun report that Hernandez’s astronomical wage demands were the main reason, claiming that he was asking for a deal what would eventually be worth a staggering £100,000-a-week.

It’s stated that Hernandez wanted £70,000-a-week to join the club, becoming the highest-paid player in the Championship, but if Villa won promotion back to the top flight, his deal would rise to £100,000-a-week.

Unsurprisingly, with a total fee of £20m involved in the deal as well, Villa moved on and went for Kodjia instead – and will hope that the 26-year-old can impress this season, having scored just one fewer goal than Hernandez last term.
