Aston Villa are preparing to smash their club transfer record by making a bid for Brentford striker Neal Maupay, according to a report.

The Sun have claimed that Villa’s owners Wes Edens and Naseef Sawaris are going to show their financial muscle by offering Brentford £20million for their hitman Maupay.

It is said the likes of Burnley, Brighton, Sheffield United and Norwich are also keen on Maupay as Dean Smith wants to reunite with the player that he worked wonders with at Griffin Park.

Over the course of the season, Maupay scored 25 goals in the Championship for the Bees [transfermarkt], including three goals against Villa during the regular season.

When Smith was Brentford manager, Maupay caused havoc against the Midland giants when he netted a brace at Villa Park before scoring the winning goal against his former boss in February.

The Sun report does state that Villa are going to smash their club record transfer by bidding £20 million for Maupay, with their current record being their £18 million capture of Darren Bent from Sunderland in 2011.
