According to the Express and Star, Aston Villa’s new owners are chasing the appointment of a new technical director as they make major changes at Villa Park.

With the club struggling financially over the summer, Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris arrived to solve Villa’s woes, taking over the club from Tony Xia.

Edens and Sawiris have so far stuck with manager Steve Bruce despite intense fan pressure after a disappointing start to the campaign, but they have started wielding the axe.

European scout Ian Atkins, loan manager Tommy Mooney and a host of others in scouting and recruitment have been sacked, with big plans in the offing.

The Express and Star report that Villa now want to bring in a technical director, which isn’t a huge surprise after the departure of Director of Football Steve Round in July.

That would give Villa a major transfer boost ahead of the January window, though one name has already been ruled out of the running.

It’s claimed that Eduardo Macia – currently Head of Senior Player Recruitment at Leicester City – is unlikely to make the move to Villa Park in what would have been a bold attempt.

A host of candidates are being considered though, and both Edens and Sawiris will hope to bring in a big-name appointment to justify their massive overhaul.
