Aston Villa and Watford have made approaches for Fabio Borini with the AC Milan man set to become a free agent at the end of the month, according to Tuttomercatoweb.

With his time at the San Siro looking all-but over, the well-travelled 29-year-old might only have one or two big contracts left in the locker.

Fortunately, Borini has just produced his best run in recent memory during a loan spell at a Hellas Verona side who confounded the critics by finishing eleventh in their first season back in the top flight.

Borini was used in a variety of roles during his time at Milan, including at wing-back on occasions.

But the former Liverpool, Chelsea, Sunderland and Swansea man has been re-born in his favoured centre-forward role at Hellas, scoring a famous winner against the giants of Juventus.

“Right now, yes (I’m playing my best football in years). Because I’m playing in my role, using my characteristics,” Borini told TMW in May, hailing the impact of Hellas’s highly-rated coach Ivan Juric.

“If you play in your role you can express yourself for who you are.”

There is a chance that Borini could be ‘expressing himself’ in England once again next season, with Aston Villa and Watford allegedly showing an interest in the soon-to-be free-agent.

Given that Villa secured their place in the top flight on the same day that Watford were relegated, you do not need us to tell you who the favourites for his signature should be.

With neither Mbwana Samatta nor Wesley making the number nine role their own at Villa Park, perhaps Borini could continue playing in his preferred position while wearing claret and blue.
