According to ESPN, Aston Villa are now interested in signing Trevor Chalobah on loan from Chelsea, who nearly joined West Brom in 2021.

What’s the story?

Well, despite an impressive breakthrough campaign last season, the 23-year-old no longer seems to be considered a regular starter by Thomas Tuchel.

Chalobah has been left on the sidelines in both of Chelsea’s Premier League games so far this season, and he could now be on his way to Villa Park after Diego Carlos suffered a significant injury.

ESPN believe Aston Villa face competition from Inter Milan for the England Under-21 international, who Chelsea are only willing to let go on a loan deal.

The Blues have no intention of letting him leave on a permanent basis.

If Aston Villa do end up losing out to Inter Milan in the race to sign Chalobah, there are alternatives.

The Villans are said to be interested in Jason Denayer to deputise for Carlos, with the Belgium international available on a free transfer.

West Brom will envy Aston Villa if Trevor Chalobah joins

Talk of Chalobah linking up with Steven Gerrard comes after the defender almost joined Aston Villa’s bitter rivals West Brom in 2021.

What’s more, Chelsea were actually ready to sanction a permanent exit before they ended up relying on him to step in, according to the Express and Star.

Despite fizzling out at Stamford Bridge, the Sierra Leone-born defender remains a quality player, and West Brom fans will surely be gutted to see him playing for their rivals after coming so close to signing him.

If Gerrard can find a way to lure Chalobah to Villa Park, it would be a very clever way to respond to the heartbreaking news about Carlos.

Keep an eye on this situation, as we believe the Chelsea No.14 will be on the move before the August 31st deadline.
