According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Aston Villa are now interested in signing Robin Olsen after failing to land Darren Randolph.

What’s the story?

Well, Aston Villa attempted to raid West Ham for the Republic of Ireland international, although they struggled in that particular pursuit.

Now, the Villans are eyeing a Sweden international in Olsen, who is currently on loan at Sheffield United from Roma.

The 32-year-old – who Roma paid €8.5m (£7m) for – spent time on loan at Everton last season, where he made seven Premier League appearances.

Steven Gerrard is currently trying to find a backup for Emiliano Martinez, as he looks to add to the signing of Philippe Coutinho.

The Villans are also pushing hard to sign Lucas Digne, with Sky Sports claiming that a fee of £25m has been agreed with Everton.

However, Gerrard could also lose a player to the Toffees, as Rafa Benitez is keen to sign Anwar El Ghazi according to the Guardian.

Robin Olsen would be a fine backup for Aston Villa

As far as deputy goalkeepers go, Olsen would be an excellent one.

The 32-year-old boasts fantastic experience, having earned 53 caps for Sweden while also playing plenty of Champions League football.

Across spells at Malmo, Copenhagen and Roma, Olsen has made 18 appearances in Europe’s greatest club competition.

The Swede has also made appearances at the World Cup, as well as the European Championship.

He’s unlikely to oust the formidable Martinez from the No.1 spot, although if the Argentine is ever injured or suspended, Olsen would be a safe pair of hands to call upon.
