The Daily Mail has reported that Aston Villa could land Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan for £800,000 this summer.

The Republic of Ireland international has been linked to Aston Villa this week and, according to The Stoke Sentinel, the Villans were knocked back with a £500,000 offer for the 33-year-old on Thursday.

But it would seem the potential deal is far from dead as The Mail now report that Villa boss Steve Bruce would have to up his initial offer by £300,000 to sign him.

It will be Bruce’s first full season at Villa Park next term and fans will be expecting a serious bid for Premier League promotion, having finished 13th last term.

And Whelan could be a very useful option to have in midfield as they chase a return to the big time.

The former Sheffield Wednesday man helped Stoke win promotion to the Premier League under Tony Pulis in 2008 and such experience could be vital for Aston Villa next season as they bid to return among England’s elite.
