It has been a healthy and productive summer for Aston Villa and Dean Smith so far, which has left the fans pretty satisfied.

But one piece of rumour which hasn’t sat well with the Villa Park faithful has involved Frederic Guilbert and the possibility that he could leave.

Well, Birmingham Live have claimed that the Frenchman is expected to stay at the club and fight for his place despite recent reports.

French outlet L’Equipe previously came out and said that Nantes could be looking to bring the defender back to his homeland.

Villa fans were concerned at what they were hearing and that prompted the Holte End favourite in coming out on Instagram and making it clear that he is happy in the Midlands.

Guilbert earned his first minutes of the season when Villa beat Bristol City in the League Cup in midweek, and once again, Guilbert took to Instagram to state how ‘difficult’ it has been for him.

There’s no doubt that Villa were defensively all over the place last season, but there’s no way a player like Guilbert was their weakest link.

It was more a case of Dean Smith’s tactics, midfielders struggling to win their battles, struggling to protect their centre-backs and the full-backs being too gung-ho.

Those at the back need to improve, and they are showing signs of that now, but it would be a crying shame if Guilbert is let go because his aggressive style on the flanks is needed.
