Dean Smith’s Aston Villa side and Arsenal are both said to be keen to bring in Gary Cahill in the January transfer window.

The England international, who played alongside Villa assistant John Terry, is thought to be available after failing to break into Maurizio Sarri’s side.
But the claret and blues’ task of bringing Cahill will not be easy, as Arsenal are now also keen.
Unai Emery’s men have limited options at centre-back, with Rob Holding recently picking up an injury.

And Arsenal are now keen to use Cahill’s experience to help them get through to end of the season.
That could be bad news for Villa, as Cahill may well want to stay at the top level, if the opportunity presents itself.
If Villa could sign Cahill it would be a eye-catching addition to their defence, but Terry and Smith will have to use all their powers of persuasion to convince the England international to take a step down to the Championship now.
