Aston Villa have reportedly held initial talks with RB Leipzig over a potential move for Jean-Kevin Augustin.

According to a report from Birmingham Live, Aston Villa have held initial talks with RB Leipzig over a potential move for Jean-Kevin Augustin, but Dean Smith’s men are currently prioritising other striker targets.

Villa have put some of their Premier League rivals to shame with their productivity during this window. Smith has been able to make a large number of signings ahead of their top flight return, and now appears to be looking for the icing on the cake.

Sky Sports recently reported that Augustin was one player on Villa’s radar, with the Bundesliga side set to demand £15 million for the 22-year-old, who was not quite as impressive during his second season in Germany.

And Birmingham Live is now reporting that the two clubs – who met in a recent pre-season friendly – have actually held talks over a move for the Frenchman, but a deal appears to look unlikely at this stage.

That is because Birmingham Live is also reporting that Villa are making a bigger push for other targets. Interestingly, the report notes that they are waiting to see if they become available in the final hours of the window.

Augustin has struggled to build on the early promise that he showed following his move to Leipzig, but he is still a young player with a lot of time to develop and perfect his game.

And Smith has shown, particularly with Brentford and Villa, that he is brilliant at helping get the best out of the players that he has faith in, so if he decides to sign Augustin before the deadline passes, perhaps he senses that the forward could be something of a wildcard for the club ahead of their return to England’s top table.
