Report: Aston Villa have no plans to open talks with Gabby Agbonlahor over new contract

Gabby Agbonlahor’s contract with Aston Villa expires at the end of the season.

According to a report from the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa currently have no plans to open contract talks with Gabby Agbonlahor, whose deal at Villa Park expires at the end of the season.

Agbonlahor has endured a turbulent career. The 31-year-old was virtually an ever-present in the side during his first decade in the first-team, but fell out of favour during their most recent season in the Premier League and only started to return to the fold once Steve Bruce was appointed as manager last season.

He has only made a handful of appearances this term however, and with his contract set to expire at the end of the campaign, there are bound to be questions surrounding what the future may hold for the forward.

And it appears that his long association with the Villans may be about to come to an end, with the Birmingham Mail reporting that the Championship high-flyers currently have no plans to discuss fresh terms.

The Mail suggests that Villa’s position in the promotion race may have something to do with their stance regarding Agbonlahor, and the report certainly does not suggest that the door has been shut on the idea of the forward earning a new contract entirely.

But given that he has scored just three league goals across the last two and a half seasons and has not reached double figures for league goals in a single season since 2010, it would appear that he may need to step his game up considerably, if given a chance, if he wants to extend his stay beyond next summer.
