According to Relevo, Aston Villa have made contact with Atletico Madrid about potentially signing Matheus Cunha in January.
This is a very interesting rumour to say the least. Cunha is a player that Unai Emery will know very well from his time in La Liga, and it’s fair to say that this would be something of a coup for the Villans.
Indeed, Cunha is currently playing for Atletico Madrid and it’s long been thought that he was set for bigger and better things.
Manchester United eyed up a move for the attacker in the summer, while Liverpool reportedly bid for Cunha prior to signing Luis Diaz in January, so that just goes to show the type of player we’re dealing with here.

Cunha has the attributes to be a superstar. His ball control is second-to-none, he reads a game very well and while he isn’t the fastest player in the world, he can certainly beat a man one-on-one.
The striker is a Brazil international, and he narrowly missed out on a place in the World Cup squad.
He would fit in brilliantly in a fluid front three at Aston Villa with Leon Bailey and Philippe Coutinho alongside him, and there’s reason to believe that the Villans could get this one done.
There is money to spend at Villa Park this January. According to The Telegraph, the Midlands club were ready to back Mauricio Pochettino with £100m over the next year if he took the job, and we have to imagine that a similar figure will be available to Emery.
Whether or not this signing comes to fruition or not remains to be seen, but Cunha would be an exciting first addition as Villa move into the Emery era.
