According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Aston Villa have joined the likes of Leeds, Sheffield United and Swansea City in the race to sign Dean Henderson on loan amid reports that he is set to sign a new contract at Manchester United.

Henderson enjoyed a superb season out on loan with Shrewsbury, helping the Shrews reach the League One play-off final. The Daily Mirror reported that a large group of sides were monitoring his situation beyond this summer as his contract at Old Trafford edged towards its expiration.

However, the Mirror is now reporting that any clubs’ hopes of a permanent deal appear to have been scuppered with Henderson set to sign a deal that could keep him with the Red Devils for the next three years.

But while a permanent move for Henderson may no longer be on the agenda, it appears that it has taken little time for a queue of clubs to form looking to sign the 21-year-old stopper on loan.

The Mirror reports that the Villans are keen, as are Leeds, Sheffield United, Norwich City and Bristol City, while Swansea could also make a move if Lukasz Fabianski moves on following their relegation from the Premier League.

Signing a new goalkeeper was always going to have to be a priority for Steve Bruce. After a testing first spell, Sam Johnstone had been a superb performer for Villa this past season, but failure to secure promotion appears to have seriously dented the club’s hopes of bringing him back for a third spell. And it now appears that Bruce would like to replace Johnstone with his Manchester United teammate next term.

Completing a deal however, looks set to be a lot easier said than done given the number of sides interested in the youngster.
