Aston Villa believe that Jack Butland’s asking price has already fallen by £4 million, with Dean Smith keen to sign him.
Villa were initially told that they would have to pay £27 million for Butland, but they could now get him for £23 million, according to the latest report.
Dean Smith’s side are yet to make a bid though, as they feel that Butland could become even cheaper if they wait.
Villa now could delay moving for the goalkeeper in the hope that his asking price continues to be reduced by Stoke.
The tactic is a potentially risky one, as Villa face competition from other clubs for the England international.
However, Villa want to be cautious not to overspend in their first season back in the top tier.
The claret and blues have already completed some ambitious transfer moves, although signing a goalkeeper is high up on Smith’s wishlist.
If Villa were to get Butland it would be an impressive addition to their squad, and he would be an upgrade on current first choice Jed Steer.
