According to the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa may yet launch a late move for Chelsea defender Gary Cahill – if he doesn’t have a Premier League move lined up.

Villa have landed two signings so far this month, bringing in goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic and defender Kortney Hause, but defensive problems mean Dean Smith will be in the market for late additions.

A centre back should be on Villa’s radar as well as another left back, and a familiar name has been linked with a shock late return to Villa Park.

The Birmingham Mail report that Villa could make a late bid for Chelsea defender Gary Cahill, with the club seemingly keen to offer him a return to Villa Park.

However, it’s stated that Villa will only try their luck at landing Cahill if he doesn’t land himself a Premier League move by deadline day, meaning they are essentially waiting to see what happens with the former England ace.

Cahill, 33, came up through the Villa ranks and spent eight years with the club before leaving for Bolton Wanderers in 2008, and then moved on to Chelsea in 2012.

Cahill has racked up more than 500 first-team appearances over the course of his career, but is struggling for playing time under Maurizio Sarri having played just 21 minutes of Premier League action this term.

A move to Villa may be somewhat appealing, given that he could go back to his former club and work alongside ex-England and Chelsea teammate John Terry, but the Premier League will no doubt he his priority.
