Report: Aston Villa consider Jed Steer recall and ending Moreira loan

Aston Villa could reportedly bring one goalkeeper back and let another go during the January transfer window.

According to a report from the Express and Star, Aston Villa are considering bringing Jed Steer back from his loan spell at Charlton Athletic while they are also set to allow Andre Moreira to return to his parent club early.

Moreira became the club’s first signing following the takeover during the summer. But he has turned into an incredibly disappointing addition for the Villans.

The 23-year-old has only played in two Carabao Cup games and has not been involved in a matchday squad since September. The Express and Star reports that he is set to be sent back to Atletico Madrid several months early.

Meanwhile, Steer could immediately return to replace the Portuguese. The Express and Star suggests that Orjan Nyland’s long-term injury has left Dean Smith with a problem ahead of the New Year’s Day clash with Queens Park Rangers.

The report suggests that incoming signing Lovre Kalinic cannot play, leaving Mark Bunn as the one remaining goalkeeper in the side for that game. Thus, Villa could recall Steer.

Steer has done extremely well at The Valley. And while Smith may have preferred to leave him out on loan getting game-time, Nyland’s injury could perhaps see the 26-year-old promoted to second-choice for the coming months once Kalinic presumably becomes the number one.
