Aston Villa have reportedly received a boost in their pursuit of Liverpool’s Harry Wilson, with Newcastle United apparently unlikely to sign the midfielder.

According to a report from Sky Sports, Aston Villa have received a boost in their pursuit of Harry Wilson with Newcastle unlikely to be able to sign the Liverpool man while he is not available on loan.

Wilson is attracting plenty of attention after a superb loan spell in the Championship with Derby County. He scored 16 goals and contributed four assists as the Rams went all the way to the play-off final.

They were denied a spot in the top flight by the Villans, and Sky Sports reports that Dean Smith is now keen to bring the attacking midfielder to Villa Park in the final days of the transfer window. However, Newcastle were also keen on the Wales international.

But Sky Sports hints that the Magpies’ hopes of signing Wilson have taken a major hit as the Reds are not prepared to loan him for the coming campaign – and that makes a move to St James’ Park highly unlikely with his asking price set at around £20 million.

Icing on the cake for Villa?

Villa have enjoyed an incredibly busy summer – the kind of window that some Newcastle fans may perhaps be envious of – so getting Wilson signed up would have to be considered the icing on the cake.

Some have suggested that Smith has potentially made too many signings and set his team up to struggle as Fulham did last year. But the signings appear to strike an ideal balance between being both shrewd and exciting, and the results in pre-season have been impressive.

Wilson’s form last season suggests that he could be ready to make an impact at the highest level. And it would be little surprise if Newcastle ultimately rue their decision to back away if indeed they have no intention of pursuing a permanent move for the youngster.
