According to the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa are back in for Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna – but a deal is ‘way off’ ahead of the transfer deadline.

Villa have tied up a third January signing today, bringing in Bournemouth defender Tyrone Mings to bolster Dean Smith’s back line.

Smith has also overseen deals for goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic and defender Kortney Hause, but one more defender is being linked.

The Birmingham Mail report that Villa are back in for Aberdeen ace Scott McKenna, though a deal for him – much like with Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden – is ‘way off’.

Villa wanted to land McKenna over the summer, but Steve Bruce’s £7million bid was rejected by Aberdeen, as reported by the Evening Express.

McKenna has continued to impress for Aberdeen this season, and a host of English clubs are being linked with last-gasp moves for the Scotland international.

Scott McKenna of Aberdeen walks on the pitch with team mates prior to the Betfred Cup Final between Celtic and Aberdeen at Hampden Park on December 2, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Yet with Mings and Hause in, who can both play at centre back, it would be a huge surprise to see Villa splash the cash on the 22-year-old before tonight’s deadline.

Strange things happen in the final hours of the transfer window though, and Villa fans will be fascinated to see whether a deal for McKenna can finally be done.
