The England-born forward would bring bags of energy and experience to Aston Villa, but the truth is that they need goals from their attackers.
Jonathan Kodjia, in his first season at Villa Park, managed a very decent return of 19 goals last term, but Gabby Agbonlahor, with nine, was Villa’s next highest scorer.
It’s not enough and although Bruce would surely add another proven goalscorer to his ranks, even if he signs Walters, the veteran manager ought to consider putting the money he reportedly intends to spend on the Potters man toward a really top-quality option.
Walters has many qualities – industry, solidity, defensive nous, versatility, experience, and he chases down every ball – but Aston Villa need goals, pace and creativity and, sadly, the veteran does not offer that from an advanced role.
