According to The Athletic, Aston Villa have made an approach for Aston Villa’s Jan Bednarek after Diego Carlos’ injury.

The Brazilian has been ruled out of action for the majority of this season after he ruptured his Achilles last weekend, and his injury has led to Villa scrambling for a new centre-back.

Bednarek is seemingly a player the Midlands club are keen on, and The Athletic claim that an approach has been made.

This is certainly an interesting link, especially when you consider that Bednarek hasn’t always been the most reliable defender in the Premier League.

Indeed, the Polish international has been on the wrong side of two 9-0 drubbings, but, on the other hand, he’s been a regular for Saints for years and he’s even earned praise from Ralph Hasenhuttl.

“He is very aggressive in the one-to-one duels at the back, and also with the ball he is calm and has a good view for the surrounding players. He is also loud, giving good tactical advice for the other players, and I think he is a very good package as a centre-back. I think he makes a very big step forward in his development and it is typical for the development of the team,” Hasenhuttl once said of Bednarek.

If Villa do land the 26-year-old it will be interesting to see what kind of role he plays within the squad.

Ezri Konsa is seemingly Villa’s first-choice at centre-back, but it does seem as though Steven Gerrard doesn’t fully trust Tyrone Mings, so it would be fascinating to see whether or not Bednarek would be coming in to replace Mings or to act as a backup to the former Villa captain.

The Villans have also been linked to Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah on a loan deal, but at this stage the move for Bednarek seems to be much more advanced.

This is certainly a situation worth keeping an eye on.
