Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday are two of the latest clubs to be linked with a move for Burton Albion midfielder Jackson Irvine.

Fellow Championship sides Derby County and Wolverhampton Wanderers are thought to be long-term admirers of the Australia international, who is now in the sights of Villa, Wednesday and Fulham too – The World Game reports.

A defensive midfielder by trade, Irvine flourished in a more advanced role this past season, scoring 10 goals in 42 league outings – including the equaliser in Burton’s 1-1 draw at Hillsborough in March.

And the report claims the 24-year-old will move “a step closer” to his Premier League dream by signing for “one of the Championship’s heavyweights” during the coming transfer window.

Irvine turned down a £100,000-a-week offer to sign for an unnamed Chinese club earlier this year, and is said to be aware he must move to a bigger club to “continue his upward career arc”.

The former Celtic player’s international teammate Mile Jedinak is currently on Villa’s books, although it remains to be seen whether Villans boss Steve Bruce will seek further midfield additions after recruiting Henri Lansbury, Conor Hourihane and Birkir Bjarnason in January.

Wednesday, meanwhile, are believed to keen on strengthening in Irvine’s position, and the 6ft 2ins star would certainly bring something different to Carlos Carvalhal’s engine room.
