Aston Villa and Newcastle United have joined Leicester City in the race to sign Attila Szalai with Fenerbahce demanding £22 million for the Premier League-linked centre-back, as reported by Blikk.

When Mesut Ozil completed a dream move to the Turkish giants during the January transfer window, few would have expected that the World Cup-winning German would be overshadowed at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium by a little-known defender.

Budapest-born Szalai has certainly taken the Super Lig by storm over the last three months.

So much so that, according to Hungarian publication Blikk, Fenerbahce will earn a substantial profit if they decide to cash in on a player snapped up from Apollon Limassol a matter of weeks ago.

Szailai is keen on a move to Leicester City.

That is no real surprise, given that Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers is famed for turning untapped potential into top-level talent, setting Odsonne Edouard, Moussa Dembele, Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho and co on the pathway to stardom.

Aston Villa and Newcastle have apparently shown an interest too.

Though if Szalai wants to hone his talents in the home of Catenaccio, a move to Napoli or Lazio will hold some appeal.

The report adds that Fenerbahce want £22 million – a fee that would see the one-time Rapid Vienna youngster replace RB Leipzig playmaker Dominik Szoboszlai as the most expensive Hungarian footballer in history.
