Rangers look set to miss out on midfielder James McArthur.

According to the Daily Mail, Aston Villa and Cardiff City are now joining Rangers in the race to sign Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur.

McArthur, 30, made his name in his native Scotland with Hamilton Academical, before moving on to Wigan Athletic in 2010, where he spent four years as a key player to earn a 2014 switch to Palace.

The Scotland international has racked up more than 125 appearances for the Eagles, scoring 15 goals, including two in his last two games for the club.

McArthur is now attracting interest though, and the Daily Mail report that whilst Rangers want to hand the boyhood Gers fan a move to Ibrox this summer, Cardiff City and Aston Villa are also keen.

Cardiff are understood to want experienced Premier League performers in their side having won promotion to the top flight, whilst Villa are in the play-offs and will be hoping to return to the Premier League themselves.

That could spell the end of Rangers’ hopes of landing McArthur, especially after the midfielder clarified last week that he is not a free agent this summer despite reports to the contrary.

Rangers not only would struggle to afford McArthur now, but with Premier League offers potentially on the table, a move to Ibrox may not be in his plans just yet, despite his love for the club.
