Report: Ashley Williams may snub interest and stay at Everton

Ashley Williams is reportedly considering staying at Everton to see out the final year of his contract at Goodison Park.

According to a report from the Liverpool Echo, Ashley Williams could end up deciding to stay at Everton this summer despite the Toffees being willing to listen to offers for the Wales international and several clubs already expressing an interest in him.

Williams has endured a difficult time at Goodison Park. He has featured regularly since arriving from Swansea City in 2016, but his form last season led to a lot of criticism from the supporters – and it appeared that Marco Silva may not disagree with those disgruntled fans.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton will listen to offers for Williams and he has a number of clubs making moves to sign him right now. However, he may ultimately decide to stick it out and fight for his place on Merseyside as he heads into the final year of his contract with the club.

Williams – who earns £70,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – deciding to stay may be an admirable stance, but it is also perhaps a questionable one. The Liverpool Echo reports that Everton have their eye on Yerry Mina and that would knock the 33-year-old even further down the pecking order, so it would be a huge mountain to climb if he hoped to get back into the side.

If he has offers from elsewhere, it appears to make a lot of sense to consider a move as those interested will probably be much more likely to offer him the kind of first-team football that he is potentially desperate for at this stage of his career.

If he does stick around, it would be little surprise if he feels that he has a lot of work to do to win the fans over as it certainly appeared that they seemed to lose most of their faith in the veteran during the last campaign. Staying when there are other offers on the table however, hints that he is more than up for the fight.
