Newcastle owner Mike Ashley reportedly wants talks with Paul Clement.
According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley wants talks with Real Madrid coach Paul Clement over becoming the club’s new manager.
The Magpies are in turmoil, with interim manager John Carver under serious pressure having lost eight games in a row, with last weekend’s 3-0 hammering at the hands of Leicester City plunging Newcastle ever closer to the relegation zone.
Now, Newcastle are just two points clear of the bottom three, and owner Ashley will be looking to make a long-term appointment this summer when Carver’s short-term deal ends.
With Derby boss Steve McClaren keen to stay at the iPro Stadium, Newcastle now need to eye up alternative targets – and The Telegraph believe that Real Madrid’s Clement is on their radar.
After serving as a coach with Chelsea, Fulham, the Republic of Ireland and Blackburn Rovers, Clement rejoined Carlo Ancelotti at Paris Saint-Germain and now Real Madrid.
The Wandsworth-born coach will be hot property this summer, with The Telegraph suggesting that he will leave the Bernabeu in search of a managerial job this summer.
They also note that Queens Park Rangers and Sunderland are targeting Clement this summer, but Ashley is keen to beat his rivals to the punch by opening talks with Clement in the near future.
Whilst a highly-rated coach, appointing Clement and expecting him to solve Newcastle’s many problems may be naive given his lack of managerial experience – but Ashley may be willing to take a gamble on an up-and-coming coach in order to get Newcastle back on track.
