All might not be lost for Newcastle United and their legion of devastated fans just yet.
It was confirmed on Thursday that Saudi Public Investment Fund weren’t going to be buying Newcastle, following a four-month delay in the Premier League greenlighting the £350 million takeover.
After so much build up, excitement and expectation, it was a horrible resolution for fans of the St James’s Park who also thought they’d be getting rid of their villainous owner Mike Ashley in the process.
But the Magpies’ faithful might get to see the end of Ashley and a new owner in place.
According to The Telegraph, United States-based media tycoon Henry Mauriss has been confident about his own bid for ‘several weeks’ and has agreed a £350 million deal with the Sports Direct founder.
The report adds that Ashley believes Mauriss has the funds available to complete a successful takeover of the North-East club.
Negotiations between Mauriss and Ashley had been ‘speeding up’ since the start of July, after the latter secretly gave up hope of the Premier League ratifying the Saudi’s bid.
Mauriss is a mysterious figure and information is scarce but, as The Telegraph claimed, Ashley believes the businessman has the money, so time will tell whether this is something to be excited about or the start of yet another false dawn.
