Mikel Arteta is now said to be ‘desperate’ for Arsenal to complete the signing of Martin Odegaard, but talks will not be starting any time soon, the London Evening Standard report.
Odegaard has made a big impact at Arsenal since arriving on loan from Real Madrid.
The 22-year-old’s recent display against West Ham United really showed off his quality, as he inspired Arsenal to come from three goals down to claim a point.
Odegaard’s display in that contest seems to have convinced Arteta that he would be a brilliant long-term signing for the club.
He is now eager to get a deal done, but may face a waiting game before he finds out if Arsenal are successful.
The Gunners are not said to be preparing to enter talks with Madrid to sign the playmaker until the summer.
Whether Madrid will be open to doing business for Odegaard remains to be seen, but the Spanish club do need to raise funds.
The Standard suggest that Arsenal are planning for the worst too, with Jesse Lingard now lined up as an alternative target.
Lingard has impressed on loan at West Ham United, but with Odegaard a younger option and already settled at the Emirates Stadium, it could be a major disappointing to both fans and manager if the Gunners do miss out now.
