Arsenal have called off their plans to offload goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez this summer, according to a report.
The 27-year-old barely had a Gunners career left before a few weeks ago, having only made a handful of Premier League appearances.
But Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been forced to use the Argentine on a regular basis since a defeat at Brighton on June 20, which was soured by a serious injury to Bernd Leno.
And it’s fair to say that Martinez has dazzled since deputising for the former Bayer Leverkusen stopper, impressing in the club’s five games since then – including an FA Cup quarter-final victory.
The Mirror has now reported that Martinez’s performances have ‘convinced’ the North London side to ‘shelve’ plans to offload him, with the club having already looked at possible replacements.
The report adds that Arteta could even sign the player up to a new deal as a reward for his heroics in recent weeks.
You won’t find many Arsenal fans who would disagree with a contract extension.
The North Londoners’ season has spiked since Martinez came into the team and although that isn’t a reflection on Leno at all, it does illustrate that the defence is confident with the South American behind them and a new deal wouldn’t go amiss at all.
