According to a report by The Athletic, Mikel Arteta and Edu have already started thinking about their future squad at Arsenal, and they believe that three defenders will be key going forward.

Indeed, the report states that the Arsenal chiefs believe that the ‘Hale End generation’ will be key to the Gunners’ future success, but they also think that more experienced players such as Kieran Tierney, Calum Chambers and Rob Holding will also be vitally important.

It’s interesting to hear that Tierney, Chambers and Holding have been earmarked for key roles going forward.

Tierney is something of a no-brainer, he’s one of the best left-backs in the country and he’s been earmarked by some as a future Gunners captain.

Holding is an interesting one as he’s been at the club for years without ever really establishing himself as the Gunners’ first-choice centre-back, while the fact that Chambers has been highlighted as a future key player is very intriguing considering his stop-start career at Arsenal so far.

This future Arsenal squad sounds as though it will be very much based around home-grown talent, and it could be a very exciting prospect considering the number of talented youngsters the Gunners have coming through at the moment.

Of course, whether or not these plans come to fruition remains to be seen, Arteta’s position has come into question in recent weeks, and if he doesn’t stick around as manager, plans will undoubtedly be altered.
