Chelsea opted against rivalling Arsenal for Thomas Partey yesterday, the Telegraph report.
Frank Lampard had actually identified Partey as a player he would like at Stamford Bridge, but with Arsenal making a last minute move, the Blues choose not to compete with their North London rivals for the defensive midfielder.
Chelsea wanted to get rid of players to make room for Partey, but failed to get rid of enough fringe squad members to make a deal viable.
That was a bonus for Arsenal, who had a clear run to sign the 27-year-old when the opportunity presented itself.
Arsenal ended up paying Partey’s release clause to take him away from Atletico Madrid in quick fashion.

Partey’s arrival at Arsenal has been greeted with great excitement, as there is a feeling he is the sort of player they have been missing for many years.
Partey should add steel and discipline to Arsenal’s midfield and that, in turn, should allow Mikel Arteta’s more creative players to shine.
