According to AS, Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira is set to join Spanish side Atletico Madrid after rejecting the chance to sign for Italian club Torino.

The Arsenal midfielder has long been out of favour at the Emirates.

The Uruguayan was signed by former Arsenal boss Unai Emery. He quickly established himself in the first team but struggled to follow up his impressive debut campaign.

Following the arrival of Mikel Arteta, Torriera has largely been a spectator. The 24-year-old last completed 90 minutes for the Gunners back in January.

According to Tuttosport last month, Torino joined the race to sign the Arsenal midfielder who was said to want to move back to Italy this past summer.

But the latest from AS now says his heart is set on a move to Atletico Madrid.

The Spanish editorial claims Torino made a fresh approach for Torreira, but the midfielder wants to play for manager Diego Simeone after holding talks with Atleti.

The deal now reportedly hinges on the La Liga club selling fellow midfielder Hector Herrera.

Arsenal paid some £27 million for Torreira from Sampdoria in 2018. It’s likely the Gunners will take a loss on him, but the North London club may not be too fussed if it helps them complete a deal for top target Houssem Aouar from Lyon ahead of the deadline.

Mikel Arteta’s side have started the campaign well enough, picking up six points from three games with their only defeat coming at Premier League champions Liverpool.
