Arsenal are yet to make contact over the signing of Patrick van Aanholt, but that could change in the next few hours, the Athletic report.

Mikel Arteta has already gone on record to state that Arsenal want a new left-back before the close of play today, following the departure of Sead Kolasinac earlier this month.

Van Aanholt has now reportedly cropped up on Arsenal’s wishlist, with the Crystal Palace full-back potentially available.

The 30-year-old has just a matter of months left on his current deal, which means that Arsenal could strike a cut price deal.

At the moment the Gunners have made no progress towards completing the transfer, but the Athletic does not rule out a bid being made in the coming hours.

They do, however, add that the most likely outcome is that the £14 million Dutchman (Sky) leaves Selhurst Park on a free transfer in the summer.

Whether Arsenal will have a deal lined up for a left-back by then remains to be seen, but it could be important that they do business today.

The Gunners may well let Ainsley Maitland-Niles go, which would leave their options on the left side of their defence short.

Although Bukayo Saka can play in that slot, he is more comfortable going forward, and Arsenal surely wouldn’t want to lose his attacking qualities now, as he has become such an integral player to the side.

It means that if Arsenal do not land a left-back today then they will be heavily reliant on Kieran Tierney staying fit.
