Arsenal are reportedly discussing making a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld.

According to a report from The Sun, Arsenal are one of the clubs weighing up a potential move for Toby Alderweireld in the summer with the Tottenham star set to be available for just £25 million.

Alderweireld’s future looks set to be a main talking point at Spurs at the end of the season. The Sun reports that his release clause is active until late July after an extension in his contract was triggered.

The Sun suggests that the Gunners could have just £40 million to spend this summer, and thus, they have discussed the possibility of making a move for the Belgian, who has been superb for Mauricio Pochettino’s men throughout the campaign and for much of his spell with the club.

The reports adds that Chelsea and Manchester City could also make their own moves for the 30-year-old, but Tottenham may yet try to agree fresh terms to ensure that they are in a much stronger position.

Of course, Arsenal chasing Alderweireld will evoke memories of one of the most controversial transfers in Premier League history when Sol Campbell joined the Gunners at the end of his Tottenham contract.

Spurs are in a somewhat similar position this time around. They are currently powerless to prevent Alderweireld leaving unless they agree a new contract with the centre-back in the coming weeks. But surely, the former Southampton man will not be plying his trade at the Emirates next year.

There looks to be a good chance that Alderweireld will be on his way this summer as things stand. But leaving for Arsenal is not the step forward that it was when Campbell was playing – especially if they are only going to be able to spend £15 million during the rest of the window.
