According to Goal, Arsenal want to sign Ajax glovesman André Onana as they look to bolster their goalkeeping department.

Goal believe that the Gunners tried to sign the 25-year-old in January, although they didn’t have the finances to submit a firm offer.

Instead, Arsenal sign Mathew Ryan from Brighton. Now however, they are back in for the 18-cap Cameroon international.

Onana is currently serving a 12-month ban handed to him by UEFA for doping, after he tested positive for Furosemide.

However, the shot-stopper claims that he accidentally took his wife’s medicine.

Even the Dutch Association of Professional Footballers described the suspension as incomprehensible and disproportionate, as Goal mention.

Aside from his ban, Arsenal have identified a fine player.

Onana has a wealth of experience in the Champions League, having racked up 24 appearances in the tournament – not including qualifying matches.

One man who’s a big admirer of the Ajax No.24 is Arsène Wenger, who singled him out for his stunning display against Tottenham.

Wenger commended Onana for his bravery in coming out to collect crosses, after Ajax recorded a 1-0 win over Spurs in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final in 2019.

Speaking on beIN Sports, the Frenchman said: “I have to compliment their goalkeeper, André Onana. He saw that his team had a hard time with high balls from the side and he dared to go far in front of his goal.”

Arsenal are in desperate need of a new shot-stopper.

Bernd Leno is struggling to convince after delivering some woeful displays of late.

Additionally, the Gunners sold Emiliano Martinez, and Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson is clearly not good enough for this level.

Goal state that Ajax would like around £12 million for Onana.

However, with his contract set to expire in 2022, £7 million could be enough to tempt the Dutch giants to the negotiating table.
