Arsenal will have to make Guido Rodriguez their second most expensive player of all time if they are to sign him.
Marca say that Arsenal are at the front of the queue to sign Rodriguez, but Betis want his full release clause if they are to sell him.
That means Arsenal face the prospect of having to fork out £70 million to capture him.
Arsenal’s record signing currently stands at £72 million, which they paid to bring in Nicolas Pepe from Lille.
Too expensive?
Whether they would be willing to do so again on another player with no Premier League experience seems doubtful.
Arsenal do appear to be prepared to invest this summer, but they don’t have limitless sums to spend, and buying any player for £70 million may not be possible.
Rodriguez is also 27, and at that age appears to have little re-sale value.
All that being said, the Spanish press seem to feel that there is a chance of the transfer happening, with Arsenal apparently leading the way for his signature.
If Rodriguez was to sign he could well add quality to Arsenal’s midfield, as you would expect from a player with his valuation.
The Argentine is most renowned for his defensive qualities, and he could form a strong shield in front of Arsenal’s defence with Thomas Partey.
Rodriguez is currently at the Copa America, so any transfer is unlikely to occur until after the international tournament finishes.
