However, Abraham clearly had his heart set on Rome and a link-up with José Mourinho, as his £34m move was announced yesterday.
90min believe Abraham was won over by Roma’s willingness to put a deal on the table, and the way they made him feel wanted.
Why didn’t they try harder?
In our view, it’s baffling that Arsenal, Tottenham, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa didn’t try harder to sign Abraham.
The 6-cap England international has scored goals wherever he’s played, impressively netting 125 goals in 266 career games.
Abraham even scored 15 Premier League goals as a 21-year-old in the 2019/20 campaign, with none coming from the penalty spot.
At 23, he’s only going to get better – there’s a reason Chelsea included a £68m buyback clause.
A Premier League proven striker, for just £34m – not too much in today’s game – seems like a pretty attractive deal.
In that respect, we can’t understand why the five Premier League clubs didn’t make serious moves to sign him weeks ago.
Their loss is almost certain to be Roma’s gain.
