According to The Times, Arsenal are close to terminating the contract of Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
Sokratis is not part of Arsenal’s Premier League or Europa League squad at the moment and has been training with the Under-23 side so far this season.
According to Transfermarkt.co.uk, the 32-year-old central defender is out of contract at the Gunners in the summer of 2021.
The Greece international centre-back joined the Gunners from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2018 for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth £17.7 million.
No big miss for Arsenal
Sokratis is a good defender, but he is 32 years of age and is past his prime.
Arsenal signed Gabriel in the summer of 2020, and he has established himself as a key figure in the team.
The defender has formed a good partnership with David Luiz, and Sokratis leaving the Gunners would not be a big miss for the North London club, just as Sead Kolasinac would not be.
The left-back is joining Schalke on loan from Arsenal for the rest of the season after struggling for playing time this campaign.
