Southampton now appear to be the new favourites to sign Arsenal target Abdul Abdulmalik after taking the striker on trial.
That’s according to Hampshire Live, who claim that Abdulmalik turned out for Southampton’s B team in a pre-season friendly against AFC Totton.
Abdulmalik scored twice in that game to earn another go against Salisbury last night, coming on as a second half substitute.
Abdulmalik’s contract with Millwall has expired, but the Lions are still entitled to compensation this summer.
The 18-year-old striker spent time on trial at Watford and Southampton’s bitter rivals Portsmouth, but was unable to win a contract.
Called up for the England Under-17’s in the past and with four goals in six FA Youth Cup games, Abdulmalik has shown potential and attracted Arsenal’s interest.

The Daily Mail noted in June that Arsenal were keen on signing Abdulmalik, alongside Rangers and Swansea City.
Arsenal have brought in Fulham’s young striker Mika Biereth this summer, so another young forward may not be needed – and that could allow Southampton to strike deal.
