According to Sky Germany (19:31), Arsenal are rivalling Inter Milan and Chelsea in the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach’s Matthias Ginter this summer.

The German international has been a regular for the Bundesliga outfit this season and his performances have attracted a number of clubs ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte is reportedly looking for a replacement to Diego Godin who isn’t getting any younger. The former Atletico Madrid skipper is expected to move on this summer and Ginter would be a very good fit for the Nerazzurri.

Chelsea are also in need of defensive reinforcements. Frank Lampard’s side had the worst defence among the top 10 sides of the Premier League this season and it will not be a surprise to see them splash some money on someone like Ginter.

The 26-year-old, a World Cup winner with Germany, is extremely versatile having played at centre-half, at right back and even as a defensive midfielder over the years.

That sort of versatility is a boon to many clubs, especially Arsenal. The Gunners are reportedly in the market for a central midfielder and their issues at centre-half has been evident throughout the season.

Ginter is good with the ball at his feet which is Mikel Arteta’s primary requirement in a centre-back. The German’s ability to play further ahead as a number six is an added boost and Arsenal can get both for the price of one.

The German only has a year left on his contract at Monchengladbach. That should make it easier for interested clubs to get him for cheap, something that would be hugely beneficial to buying clubs in this financial climate.

With Inter Milan and Chelsea also in the race for Ginter, Arsenal will find it difficult to sign him, especially with the possibility of having no European football. However, his versatility and his reduced value due to his contract might give them a big opportunity to sign him if they move quickly.
