The Daily Mail are reporting that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is readying a £40 million offer for United forward Anthony Martial, as he undergoes a massive squad overhaul at the Emirates.

The 21-year-old arrived at Old Trafford from Monaco in September 2015 for an initial fee of £36 million, which could eventually rise to in excess of £60 million, according to Sky Sports.

The France international was initially deployed through the middle as an out-and-out striker under Louis van Gaal, but has been utilised as a winger since the arrival of Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese does obviously not rate Martial too highly though, with the former Monaco man’s tally of just 18 Premier League starts last season evidence of this.

Martial is undoubtedly still one of the brightest prospects in football though, and it is sometimes easy to forget that he is still only 21.

And the Daily Mail claim that Wenger is a big fan of the pacey star. They suggest that he is willing to offer United £40 million for his services, as he prepares for life without Alexis Sanchez.

The report does go on to suggest that the Arsenal boss believes that Mourinho would under no circumstance do business with him over a potential deal for Martial, so in an effort to bring him to north London, he wants to go above the 54-year-old’s head, and enter discussions with the United board.

If Wenger does manage to secure a deal for Martial, not only would it be a significant signing for Arsenal, but it would also be a hammer blow to Mourinho, from a psychological standpoint at least.
