According to a report from Egyptian outlet ExtraSport, Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny could still leave the Emirates this summer.
The former Basel man enjoyed a successful loan spell in Turkey at Besiktas last season. Many expected Elneny to be sold this summer, but Mikel Arteta has surprisingly included him in his plans.
The Egyptian started the Community Shield game against Liverpool as well as the opening match in the Premier League against Fulham. Elneny was an unused substitute in Arsenal’s second league game, but Arteta later said the 28-year-old should have started (Football London).
Elneny is expected to start tonight’s game against Leicester City, but could it be his last match as an Arsenal player?
ExtraSport claims that Elneny’s agent was in Turkey yesterday in discussions with Galatasaray and Trabzonspor. The Super Lig giants are reportedly interested in the Egyptian and he has more than one offer on the table.
It will be interesting to see how this pans out. Elneny is not a first-choice starter for Arsenal by any means. However, he is still a decent option for Arteta, especially in the Europa League and in the domestic cups.
However, there has been a lot of talk about Arsenal’s interest in signing a new central midfielder. Thomas Partey is reportedly their number one target in Elneny’s position and, if they can sign him, the Egyptian’s chances of regular game time take a further hit.
If Partey does join Arsenal before the transfer window closes, Elneny will likely be allowed to leave, and he could well return to Turkey after a very successful spell there last season.
