According to The Athletic, Patrick van Aanholt will be leaving Crystal Palace when his contract expires at the end of next month.

This will be of interest to Arsenal and Leeds, who were both said to be eyeing the Dutchman back in January.

It was the Mirror who said that Leeds were hoping to sign Van Aanholt on a free transfer this summer.

Another report from the Mirror claimed that Arsenal were thinking about making a late move for the left-back on deadline day in January.

Of course, both Arsenal and Leeds were forced to wait as Crystal Palace weighed up whether to offer the £55,000-a-week defender a new deal.

Now, however, The Athletic have confidently stated that he will be leaving.

In our view, this is one of the best freebies on the market this summer.

While Van Aanholt might be a bit of a defensive liability at times, there are few better attacking full-backs in the Premier League.

During spells with Chelsea, Wigan, Sunderland and Crystal Palace, he has amassed 212 Premier League appearances.

In those outings, Van Aanholt has scored 20 goals, and provided 15 assists.

Arsenal need backup for Kieran Tierney, so this could be an excellent, and cheap, solution.

In Marcelo Bielsa’s case, he needs a new left-back with Ezgjan Alioski’s contract set to expire soon. Behind the North Macedonian, there are few options to fulfil the role.

Keep an eye on this transfer saga, with just weeks to go until the transfer window opens.

Surely, a player of Van Aanholt’s pedigree won’t be a free agent for long.
