Arsenal are now trying to tie up a deal for Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand, Goal.com report.

Arsenal are said to be keen on Bertrand, with his contract at Southampton set to come to an end in the summer.

On a free transfer, the left-back looks like a very appealing option for Premier League sides, given his vast experience.

And it is claimed that Arsenal have now made contact with the defender, with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side also entering discussions to bring him in.

Arsenal were actually linked with the Southampton man in January, but were unable to get a deal done at that stage.

It seems that Mikel Arteta’s side have retained an interest though, as their left-back problems have been exposed in the second half of the campaign.

Kieran Tierney’s injury means that Granit Xhaka has had to fill in at left-back, with Arteta seemingly not trusting Cedric Soares to play there.

Betrand, who once won the Champions League with Chelsea, has spent his entire career in the Premier League.

Although he would only come in as a back-up option, he would offer competition for Tierney’s place.

And with Arsenal looking to mount an improved challenge next season, the 31-year-old looks like a solid option, especially on a free transfer.
