Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal and Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United are set to miss out on Matheus Cunha, with Marca reporting that Wolverhampton Wanderers are close to reading an agreement with Atletico Madrid over the transfer of the striker.

The Spanish publication have claimed that Premier League club Wolves are on the verge of striking a deal to sign Cunha from former La Liga champions Atletico in the January transfer window.

This development on the future of Cunha will come as a blow for both Arsenal and Leeds.

The Gunners and the West Yorkshire club have also been linked with the 23-year-old Brazil international striker.

The Athletic reported on Monday that Leeds have ‘serious interest’ in the striker and wanted to sign him before he went to Atletico from Hertha Berlin.

The report claimed that Arsenal were considering whether or not to enter the race for the youngster and make a bid for him.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly looking for a number 9 due to the injury to Brazil international striker Gabriel Jesus that will keep him on the sidelines for three months at least.

However, it seems that Arsenal have missed the boat on the Brazilian youngster.

It will be interesting to see how Cunha does at Wolves, if indeed he makes the move to the Premier League club.

Described as “extraordinary” by former Inter Milan player Paolo Tramezzani in FC InterNews in May 2020, the Brazil international striker has not had the best of times at Atletico, but there is no doubt over his technical ability and quality.
