According to La Provence, Pape Gueye arrived in Marseille on Tuesday in order to undergo a medical with the Ligue 1 side.

Gueye’s situation has been a truly bizarre one. The midfielder has impressed with Le Havre this season, and had been running down his contract with the Ligue 2 side.

He had been confirmed as a Watford player having signed a pre-contract agreement with the Premier League side, but that’s where things took an odd turn.

Gueye changed his mind about joining Watford, and his entourage told Le Phoceen last month that Arsenal had offered to treble his salary if he made the move to the Emirates Stadium instead.

The quotes also stated that Gueye wanted to play two or three more years in France’s top flight before heading abroad, and he now looks set to get what he wants.

Marseille have agreed a deal with Watford for Gueye’s signature, and having completed a medical on Tuesday, he will now sign a four-year contract.

The 21-year-old has been compared to N’Golo Kante, playing predominantly as a midfielder who breaks up play and protects the back four.

Arsenal could have landed him as another talent for the future, but despite their lucrative offer, they look to have been beaten to a deal by Marseille.
