Arsenal are weighing up a summer bid for Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, according to Italian media outlet Calcio Mercato, as Arsene Wenger looks to bolster his defensive ranks at the Emirates.

The Gunners have arguably one of Europe’s best attacking line-ups, but their defensive frailties continue to hamper their progress.

Calcio Mercato claims that Wenger sent his scouts to watch Koulibaly, 26, in action against RB Leipzig on Thursday night, although the Frenchman would have to part with at least £40 million if he wants to sign him this summer.

Is Koulibaly actually what Arsenal need though?

Standing at 6ft 2in tall, and powerfully built, the Senegal international possesses all of the attributes that the Gunners are currently desperately bereft of.

He is strong and commanding in the air, quick along the ground, and at the age of 26, he is at the perfect age to make the transition from Serie A to the Premier League.

Wenger desperately needs to refreshen his defensive options, with Laurent Koscielny well past his best, and Shkodran Mustafi proving to be inconsistent at the best of times.

Koulibaly would be a wonderful acquisition for the north London outfit, and £40 million would actually represent decent value in today’s transfer market.
