Arsenal are reportedly ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Andre Gomes, who is set to cost around £35 million.

According to a report from Gianluca Di Marzio, Arsenal have joined Tottenham in the race to sign Andre Gomes this summer and the Gunners are actually said to be the side leading the charge for the Barcelona midfielder.

Gomes has struggled to establish himself as an important player at the Nou Camp. He started in just six of his 16 La Liga appearances last season and failed to provide a goal or assist in the top flight. Nevertheless, he is said to have some high-profile admirers this summer.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Spurs and Arsenal are both keen on luring Gomes to the Premier League, and he could be available for around £35 million during the coming weeks. Interestingly, the report adds that Unai Emery is currently in the driving seat to land Gomes’ signature, but a bidding war could well ensue with Spurs also interested.

Gomes may not have enjoyed the best time with the Catalan giants, but the 24-year-old is still learning his game and would arguably be an asset to either Mauricio Pochettino’s or Emery’s squad this summer should either of the North London sides manage to complete a deal for the Portugal international.

The former Valencia ace seems to be more than capable of fulfilling a number of roles across the midfield, whether he is needed to be a threat in attack or give the side more control in the middle of the park with his pressing or passing abilities. He has also shown that he can be deployed out wide on either flank if required.

That versatility perhaps makes it seem clear why Arsenal have joined the race and why Spurs remain interested in bringing him in this summer. And it will be interesting to see whether one of the bitter rivals is able to strike an early blow heading into the new season by completing a deal for Gomes during this window.
