The Athletic claim Arsenal are considering a move to sign New York City striker Valentin Castellanos. The striker has also been linked with a move to West Ham United, having scored 23 goals during the 2021 campaign.
Castellanos, 23, enjoyed a brilliant season with New York City – his best since joining the MLS. The Argentine Under-23 star also laid on eight assists, and European clubs have come calling to sign the South American talent.
In December, the Mail reported that West Ham were battling Turkish side Besiktas to sign Castellanos – who is rated at £15million. But now, the Athletic report that West Ham are not the only London club interested.
Indeed, Arsenal are set to lose Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah at the end of the season free transfers – and might need to sign a striker or two. Castellanos is the latest striker to be linked with a move to the Gunners.
Castellanos to Arsenal: Argentine would be a good signing for Arteta
Arsenal need two strikers. With Lacazette and Nketiah likely to go, the Gunners might also cash in on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – with the armband removed. The player has also been ostracised by the Gunners.
So, Arsenal need two. While they will likely go after a big-name striker in the form of a Dom Calvert-Lewin, or a Dusan Vlahovic, they will also need one that provides cover. Castellanos might be ideal.
His creativity also allows him to play out wide or as a 10 and that will give him the game time necessary not only to provide back-up. At £15million, he would be a good addition for the Gunners.
