Rob Holding is only just returning from a long lay-off through injury, and William Saliba has been loaned back to Saint-Étienne for the season.
So the addition of Upamecano would be much needed.

The 20-year-old is a towering central defender who is strong in the air and quick along the ground.
It could be argued that he, along with Saliba, is the future of the French national team’s defence, and he is undoubtedly a future star of the game.
The Daily Mail claims that Leipzig are demanding Emile Smith-Rowe as part of the deal, however, so Arsenal might just have to let the young winger move to Germany, if they want to snare Upamecano.
And in the grand scheme of things, they need the Leipzig defender more than they do Smith-Rowe.
